Musical Notation

November 26, 2000 – This past week RMM Records admitted to filing for Bankruptcy under Chapter 11 in a legal maneuver to protect itself financially. The backruptcy stems from a previous lawsuit brought on by singer/composer Glenn Monroig. The original suit filed by Monroig alleged that his tune, Yo Soy, was changed without his permission. The tune, the suit alleges, was lyrically changed and released as the title track of the RMM documentary YO SOY DEL SON A LA SALSA, thus violating copyright law. Monroig was awarded the ridiculous sum of 7.7 million dollars by the court in Puerto Rico, where he resides. This is a ridiculously high award especially since the original recording sold far less than 50,000 units, not to mention that the documentary was considered a flop by theatrical release standards. RMM Record's legal team, headed by Brian D. Kaplan, feel confident that this matter will eventually be overturned, or substantially reduced in the appeals process. As for now business at RMM will continue as usual.

While we're on the subject of lawsuits it appears that Marc Anthony has resolved his legal problem brought on when he allegedly assaulted Leo Fernandez III, a journalist residing in Puerto Rico. According to Fernandez he and Marc see eye-to-eye now and regret what happened. He further stated that everyone involved was pleased with the outcome of their negotiations.

Ismael Miranda was in town last week for a concert at the Lehman College Center for the Performing Arts. Needless to say he gave a great performance which included a repertoire of just about all the hits he recorded with Harlow, Willie Colon, and as a soloist. He's currently working on a live recording that should be released in early 2001 which is being produced by Gilberto Santa Rosa. For all accounts it sounds like a winner. There are also plans for a studio session later in 2001.

Finally, Telemundo has announced that this year's Banco Popular Christmas Special will be dedicated to Jose Feliciano, considered the first Latino "crossover" artist. The special, which will include the participation of over twenty musical personalities, will air on Sunday, December 3rd. Check your local listings for time and channel.

Hasta la proxima, ciao…
