Salsa's Next Generation: Michael Stuart
August 27, 2000 - Getting old is a
bitch. It's a time for one to either accept things for what they are, or to
continue to live a lie and make things even more miserable. Accepting things for
what they are is a good thing, and something one needs to do to continue living
a productive life. It's a time of retrospection, a time for one to make peace
with one's self. Admitting to one's mistakes in life and basking in one's
triumphs is a very productive thing. It is probably the best way to accept that
the end is approaching and that it is now time to embark on a new journey. After
all, all good things must come to an end. Or do they?
Not so, thanks to guys like Michael Stuart. Like those that came before him,
guys like Hector Lavoe, Ruben Blades, and Gilberto Santa Rosa, Michael has got
that certain something that one just can't put a finger on. To hear it from
Michael, "There are a couple of things. First, and foremost, there's clave.
There are many guys today with tremendous voices, but they know deep down inside
that they are not really "salseros". They are really pop and
ballad singers just trying to branch out. Me, I'm a people person. I identify
with those that come to hear me sing.
Hasta la
proxima, ciao…
