India, Marla and Ralph Mercado at the Motown Cafe

I had the pleasure of interviewing La India at the RMM Press/CD Release Party for her new CD, "Sobre el Fuego" at the Motown Cafe in New York City. India truly deserves the title "Princess of Salsa" not only because of her incredible talent and vocal range, but also because of her warm and generous personality. India is the kind of person who gives and gives of herself while maintaining an energetic and dynamic personality. Her warmth and magnetism comes through both on stage and up close. I hope you enjoy this chat with La India as much as I enjoyed it.

Marla:
India, it seems that your music has a message, that you care about getting through to people. What is the most important message that you would like to get out?

India:
Oh yeah, India has a message. To believe in yourself and to follow your dreams.

Marla:
How about for kids in particular? There are a lot of young fans out there who adore you. What is your message to them?

India:
It is important for young people to believe in themselves, not to do drugs, to stay in school and to follow their dreams. And to remember that when someone tells you that you are not good enough or that you can't do something -- that you believe in yourself, that you know you can do anything in your heart.

Marla:
What advice do you have for young people who would like to become soneros?

India:
To keep at it. Take lessons, learn an instrument. Learn about the clave. Latin music is different than American music because of the clave. A salsa singer has to learn to phrase around the clave. Most importantly, you have to believe in yourself and hold on to your dreams.

Marla:
What is your dream?

India:
My dream is about love, everybody loving each other. But, before you can love somebody else, you have to love yourself. You have to deal with yourself. Each day is a new day and a new chance to take a step forward. When you take those steps, it is good to know that God is by your side.

Marla:
What do you think about salsa on the internet?

India:
I've heard a lot of good things about Salsaweb. I thank you for allowing me to reach so many people. I think the internet is a positive thing.

Marla:
How are you handling fame?

India:
You have to live up to expectations people have of you and there are a lot of people who may try to bring you down. But, again, you have to believe in yourself and keep positive energy. Keep going against all odds.

Marla:
Isn't that the theme of your new CD "Sobre el Fuego?"

India:
Yeah, through the fire. Life is like walking through the fire. I know I'm going to go through it but nothing is going to happen to me. I'll be alright.

Marla:
Is there anything else you would like to say to Salsaweb readers?

India:
Yeah, I'd like to wish all the Salsaweb readers who are chillin' out there a happy and healthy holiday. Yeah Salsaweb!
